Resurrect Your Resolve and Finish Strong

Guest Blog Post

Has it been a long day? Is the week d-r-a-g-g-i-n-g on? How’s the school semester going? What’s the old expression, “Are you feeling like your get up and go, has got up and gone?”  Don’t despair!  Whether you are new to homeschooling or a seasoned veteran, it is totally normal to feel a bit weary, and “all under-the-circumstances” at this time of year. There is hope. Let’s refocus, get some perspective, and finish the year strong!

Remember Why You’re Homeschooling and Recommit to Your Mission

There are as many reasons to homeschool as there are homeschooling families. Lots of folks are attracted to homeschooling because they can readily incorporate their moral and ethical beliefs into the customized academic and extra-curricular education their children receive. What is your purpose for homeschooling? When counselors advise about major life decisions they often suggest, “beginning with the end in mind”.  When it’s all said and done, what will you have “said” and “done”?  Keep a long range, dare I say, eternal perspective on your homeschool labor of love. Whatever your reasons, revisit the core principles that led you to homeschool and be re-inspired.

Reconnect with Your Children then Review Your Approach

How do your children learn? Consider their learning styles when you teach. Some students need to count physical apples, others need to sing about apples, a third group will naturally do the math in their heads. Your fifth grader might retain more if you switch math to the morning and work for a shorter block of time. Study language arts in the afternoon. Your twin’s restlessness may be a sign of readiness for a new challenge. Become a student of your students and watch your children blossom.

Refresh Yourself and Renew the Spirit in Your Home

I love the saying, “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!” Mama’s countenance impacts domestic tranquility. Self-care is not selfish. It is essential for your well-being and for that of your family. When was the last time you took a moment for yourself, by yourself or with other moms? Be intentional and carve out “protected time”. You can’t always arrange a day away, but a simple 7 minute walk around your yard can bring relief. When young children nap, you should too. With older youngsters try “battery free time” when everyone is occupied quietly and electronic gadgets are turned OFF. Start with 10 – 15 minutes and build up. If your body and mind break down, where will you live?  Press PAUSE at least once daily. Enjoy the revival that transforms your heart and your household.

Simply Re-calibrate! You’re Doing Great!

Ask Jesus to resurrect your resolve to finish the year with excellence. You and the Lord are a winning team! Rejoice!

And I am certain that God,
who began the good work within you,
will continue his work until it is finally finished
on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Philippians 1:6 NLT
