Homeschool Teacher Sick Days

What do you do when you’re sick?

If you were at a school, all you had to do was call a number to let them know you’re sick, and a substitute teacher would be sent to your class that day.

Wouldn’t THAT be nice if, as homeschool moms, we had a substitute teacher!

But alas, the reality is that many of us don’t have a person to call to come in and teach for us when we are sick. So, what do you do?

Well, Andrea Hall has some tips for Homeschool Teacher Sick Days.

Tip 1: Have a Written Routine

Having a written routine already in place really helps when you are sick. In my family, we have a morning time routine. The kids know it, and when I’m sick, I can empower one of them to implement that part of the schedule. Here is what my morning time routine looks like:

  • Bible
    • Prayer
    • 2-3 Scripture Songs
    • Scripture Memory Box
    • Bible Story/Reading
    • Reading Comprehension Questions about the Story
    • Prayer Requests and Closing Prayer
  • Breakfast
  • CNN10
  • Schoolwork

Tip 2: Create a List of Backup Activities

Think of things your kids like to do that can also be educational. For example:

  • Scrabble teaches spelling (and math for the scores)
  • Uno teaches numbers and colors
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Legos
  • Math Bingo
  • Fun educational websites like Reading Eggs/Mathseeds, PBS Kids

After you create the list, schedule it throughout the day.

Tip 3: Create a Homeschool Substitute Teacher Playlist on YouTube

Simply put, I would search YouTube for videos on concepts I planned to cover in my homeschool that day (or something I wanted to reinforce). Then I would create a playlist of those videos. Typically, I like to have one in each subject. Here is an example  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkmQQ4wTF6dw29p9usINcEsL5TWegXBgZ.

Tip 4: Take the Day

The beauty of homeschooling is that you control the days. Take the time to rest and regroup.

This is what Andrea Hall does on her sick days. What about you?
